If you stumbled upon this post while searching for a message that validates your desire to return to a particular relationship, this post is not for you. This post exists to do the opposite. It exists to dissuade you from returning to harmful dynamics.
Time has a way of softening memories for some people. The arguments become less vivid. The disrespect becomes easier to excuse, and your recollection of what everyday life actually felt like becomes clouded. Before long, your mind starts replaying the highlights while quietly editing out the reality. Don’t let it. Never forget how they made you feel. Not how they made you feel during the honeymoon phase. And not how they made you feel when they realized you were pulling away. Remember how they made you feel consistently.
Did you feel emotionally safe? Did you feel heard? Did you feel respected? Did you feel valued at all?
Did you feel free to express your needs without fear of punishment, withdrawal, or ridicule? Or did you spend days walking on eggshells, overexplaining yourself, questioning your own reality, and hoping that tomorrow would be different? Exactly. Don’t romanticize that shit.
If your peace returned after the relationship ended, don’t dismiss that as coincidence. If your anxiety lessened, your confidence grew, your laughter returned, or you finally felt like yourself again, those are not details to overlook. They are evidence. Evidence that they don’t belong in your life. Evidence of what your life will be like again if you go back, except it will actually be worse.
If you believe they’ve changed, good for them. Let them apply their changed behavior in their next relationship. But you absolutely do not owe anyone a do-over. Seriously, think about this for a second…Imagine you invited someone into your beautiful clean house, and they choose to act a fool. They take a big crap on your floor and smear it on the walls and then they leave you to clean it all up. Just you by yourself. You have to replace furniture, replace the carpets / rugs, and deep clean. Then, once you’ve cleaned your home, they come back wanting to enter because they are going to do better. Absolutely not! Why? Because it’ll be the same shit!
So, remember the emotional cost of experiencing those moments. Remember what it took to get yourself back. Remember how often your needs were minimized, your intuition questioned, or your boundaries ignored. Your home is no longer available to people who taught you how expensive their presence can be.
You don’t have to hate someone to know they are not good for you. Sometimes the most loving thing you can do for yourself is refuse to forget what it felt like to survive a relationship that was slowly convincing you to abandon yourself.
Never forget how they made you feel. Not so you can remain angry. But so you never again confuse familiar pain with love. Never again.
